What is the Tarak Mantra?

The Tarak Mantra is predominantly mentioned in the Shiva Purana and various other scriptures. This sacred mantra of Lord Shiva is believed to bestow liberation (moksha) upon an individual at the time of their death. It is referred to as "Tarak," meaning it helps the soul transcend the cycle of birth and death, guiding it to Shiva Loka (the realm of Lord Shiva). 

According to these scriptures, Lord Shiva revealed this mantra to Sage Markandeya when the sage was overwhelmed by the fear of death. Through this mantra, Lord Shiva alleviated his fears and assured that anyone who chants it with genuine devotion will be freed from the suffering of worldly existence.

As for Varanasi, it is believed that those who hear the Tarak Mantra at Manikarnika Ghat are liberated from the cycle of birth and death and are granted a direct passage to Shiva Loka. Varanasi, known as the "City of Salvation," is regarded as the abode of Lord Shiva, and there is a deep connection between Manikarnika Ghat and the Tarak Mantra.

 Significance of Manikarnika Ghat:
Manikarnika Ghat, one of the oldest and holiest ghats in Varanasi (Kashi), is tied to the legend of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is said that while Goddess Parvati was bathing at this site, her ear ornament (manikarnika) fell into the waters. Lord Shiva is believed to have searched for it, and this event consecrated the place as a sacred location. 

The ghat is considered the land of liberation (moksha) in Hinduism, with the belief that a cremation performed here ensures the soul's direct path to salvation. Manikarnika Ghat is also known as "Mahashmashan" due to the continuous burning of funeral pyres.

The Manikarnika Kund, a sacred pool at the ghat, is believed to have been created by Lord Vishnu with his discus (chakra). Lord Vishnu is also said to have meditated here, leaving his footprints as a sign of his presence.

 Connection to the Tarak Mantra:
It is believed that at the time of death at Manikarnika Ghat, Lord Shiva himself imparts the Tarak Mantra to the departing soul. Anyone who passes away in Kashi is thought to be guided by Lord Shiva, who chants the mantra on their behalf, leading their soul to liberation. 

Chanting the Tarak Mantra brings mental peace and purification, freeing individuals from the fear of death and attachment to worldly desires. According to the Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva recites the Tarak Mantra for those who die at Manikarnika Ghat, guiding them toward their final liberation.
