There are festivals, and then there is the Jagannath Rath Yatra. Once a year, in the sacred coastal town of Puri, Odisha, the divine leaves the sanctum to walk among the people. Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra step out of the 12th-century Jagannath Temple and travel through the streets on massive wooden chariots, pulled not by kings or priests, but by ordinary devotees — millions of them, shoulder to shoulder, hand on the same rope.

This year, the main Rath Yatra falls on Thursday, July 16, 2026, making it one of the most spiritually significant weeks on the Hindu calendar — and a moment of deep reflection for devotees everywhere, including here in Banaras.

Why the Lord Leaves His Temple

The legend behind Rath Yatra is as moving as the festival itself. Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu, wishes to visit his aunt's home — the Gundicha Temple, about three kilometres from the main temple — believed to have been built in honour of Queen Gundicha. So once a year, the Lord sets out on his chariot with his siblings, travelling among his devotees rather than waiting for them to come to him.

It's a festival built on equality. Even the Gajapati King of Puri sweeps the chariot path with a golden broom before the procession begins — a ritual called Chhera Pahanra — a reminder that before the divine, all are equal, from king to commoner.

Key Dates for Rath Yatra 2026

The Three Sacred Chariots

Each year, skilled hereditary carpenters build three new chariots from scratch, using wood from the Dasapalla forests of Odisha — a tradition passed down through generations.

• Nandighosha — Lord Jagannath's chariot, around 45 feet tall with 16 wheels, wrapped in a red and yellow canopy.
• Taladhwaja — Lord Balabhadra's chariot, decorated in red and green.
• Darpadalana — Devi Subhadra's chariot, with 12 wheels, covered in black and red.

Devotees believe that even a glimpse of these chariots, or the mere act of pulling the rope, carries the power to wash away karma and grant spiritual merit — a belief rooted in the Skanda Purana itself.

You don't need to stand on the Grand Road of Puri to feel the significance of Rath Yatra. At its heart, the festival carries a beautiful spiritual metaphor drawn from the Katha Upanishad: the human body itself is the chariot, the intellect is the charioteer, and the soul rides within — on a journey toward the divine.
